Rock n Roll Wheelchair

Rock n Roll Wheelchair started out as a design project from school. The aim of the project is to familiarise students with industrial mechanical design requirements. However, my project group exceeded expectations and managed to further extend our project into the Assistive and Rehabilitation Technologies Student Innovation Challenge (ARTSIC). My team improved the wheelchair design and was awarded a BRONZE MDEAL for Design Category of the competition.

I was mainly in charge of the driving mechanism of the wheelchair and the detailed calculations. As the project requirements limit us to utilise mechanical systems only, a Crank and Rocker mechanism is implemented as the main Driving Mechanism for the wheelchair. The detailed calcualtion revealed that the wheelchair would require an average force of 60N to operate smoothly.

I was also the pilot for the wheelchair! I would like to think it's because I am the one that understands the mechanism best but the truth is it's because I am the smallest in size 😅.
